Qualified Patent Attorney – Chemistry and Life Sciences

Based in: Abel & Imray’s London office
Salary: Competitive, based on qualifications and experience

With a significant increase in client work, we are ready to welcome a new attorney. This is an opportunity for a chemist to work with an inspiring range of clients in innovative sectors as part of our Chemistry and Life Sciences team.

We are looking for a fully qualified pharmaceutical patent attorney with excellent chemical and life sciences knowledge, ideally with an emphasis on chemistry. While you’ll be a new recruit, you’ll also quickly become involved in building our firm’s future – helping to shape our client portfolio and seek out new business opportunities.

What you’ll be doing

Although there’s no such thing as a ‘typical day’ as an Abel & Imray attorney, your position will involve:

• Dealing directly with clients worldwide – whether it’s a laboratory-based scientist or the in-house attorneys of a global corporation – to help them get the best from their inventions. You’ll speak your clients’ language – no matter how technical. And you’ll build enduring partnerships along the way.
• Drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications. These tasks will make up a huge part of your role, drawing on both your legal expertise and technical knowledge.
• Drafting and filing opposition statements and handling subsequent steps before the EPO, including appeals.
• Preparing opinions to guide our clients in the development of their important business ventures. These will draw on your technical and legal expertise as well as making use of your commercial and pragmatic approach.
• Helping us grow our firm by making new contacts, helping new clients and impressing existing ones.

• Working closely with a number of partners. We’re truly collaborative here at Abel & Imray and teamwork involves everyone from new starters to long-established partners.

Put simply, a diverse workload and a mandate to protect some of the field’s most pioneering ideas will keep you on your toes.

Where you’ll work – and what we offer

We’ll expect a lot from you, but will offer a lot in return. As well as day-to-day support, we’ll make sure your working environment is dynamic and inclusive – one where your career can really blossom. We will support your career development with a combination of in-house and external training. In fact, you’ll be joining our steadily growing firm at an exciting time, in our modern office in London. You’ll also get to visit our Bath and Cardiff offices as our team works collaboratively across the firm.

Alongside a competitive salary, you’ll have a generous holiday entitlement to play with. And you can also choose from a host of other lifestyle benefits, including private healthcare.

More about us

From the ideas we protect, to the way we run our business, everything we do is about looking to the future. Right now, we’re proud to partner with some of Europe’s and the world’s most innovative life sciences companies. We also work for some of the world’s leading academic institutions. At the same time, you’ll be joining a firm with a prestigious history and reputation.

We are also proud to be an inclusive, equal opportunities and flexible employer, and we are members of IP Inclusive and WISE. That means treating everyone at Abel & Imray fairly, as well as respecting each employee’s personal goals and ambitions. However yours line up, we’ll champion them.

How to apply

If the above sounds like you – and you like the sound of us – please send your CV and a covering letter.

We very much welcome direct applicants for this role and may be able to offer a joining bonus if you approach us directly, rather than via an agency.

We don’t currently have a closing date for applications but are expecting to be holding interviews soon. If you have any questions about the role or would just like to have a confidential chat before formally applying, please contact Paul Brady.
